Overview
Responsible for teaching a variety of outpatient prenatal and parenting classes related to childbirth and infant care, in a group class setting or one-on-one. Plans, prioritizes and implements educational programs/classes which are in compliance with ACOG, APA and AWHONN objectives meeting hospital current standards (evidence based practice). Able to perform tours of Labor and Delivery and Women and Infant Care using the most updated information from departments.

What you will do
  • Links customer needs with community endeavors, i.e. Healthy Families, SMART BEGINNINGS, breast pump and breast feeding resources etc. and participates in related service events.
  • Completes program job requirements within designated times. Assist other educators in departmental activities or completion of task. Willingness to substitute teach if needed.
  • Plans, prioritizes and implements educational programs which are in compliance with American Diabetes Association objectives, RHCS Staff Development, and other identified needs. Offerings are presented clearly in both class and one-on-one. Completes curriculum timely. Assists with performance improvement activities as assigned. Provides resources to staff nurses and therapists in the area of diabetes management. Engages in client/family teaching. Effectively communicates with client/family and the interdisciplinary team.
  • Child Birth Instructor attends quarterly meetings with Riverside Partners in Women’s Health physician’s and Women and Infant Care Complex Nurse Managers. This group participation/partnership will allow shared information to keep educators, Nurse Managers and physician’s updated on class information, changes to practice and current procedures. Enhances integration with customers and patients through seamless coordination of services and providing quality of care and communications.
  • Accountable for teaching or providing coverage of all assigned classes. Utilizes adult learning theory to teach childbirth education classes including an overview of the labor process; coping mechanisms such as relaxation, breathing and positioning; complications of birth; pre-term labor, C-sections. Teaches a variety of classes that may be 1 (2 hour session), 4 (2 hour sessions) or an eight- hour class. Maintains record of attendance and collects class evaluations.

Qualifications

Education
  • Bachelors Degree, Nursing or Related Field (Preferred)

Experience
  • Less than 1 year Experience teaching in a healthcare education setting (Preferred)

Licenses and Certifications
  • Certified Childbirth Educator (CCE) - CAPPA (Required) or
  • Registered Nurse (RN) - Virginia Department of Health Professions (VDHP) (Required)
  • CPR/BLS Certification - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) (Preferred)
  • Maternal Newborn Nursing - National Certification Corporation for the Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Nursing Specialties (Preferred)
