The Assistant Director – Health Sciences is responsible for training, development, and planning. This role supports the Director in further developing and refining the college’s academic advising model, incorporating a guided pathways approach to student enrollment and retention, creating a seamless transition for students into academic programs. The Assistant Director – Health Sciences participates in hiring and managing of staff within Academic Advising as well as participates in departmental evaluations as part of the annual review process. The Assistant Director also serves as a senior expert advisor, providing holistic academic advising to students from entry to completion.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Supervises, trains, and evaluates assigned staff within the Health Sciences career pathway.
  2. Approves all leave requests and coordinates all coverage specific to Health Science pathway advising.
  3. Advises students in our One College Model. This includes Corporate and Continuing Education (CCE), College and Career Readiness (CCR), and Curriculum (CU) students. 
  4. Develops, implements processes, and train advisors on how to manage and address Standards of Academic Progress (SOP) escalations as well as classroom early alert interventions.
  5. Provides the Director with assistance in hiring, training, and supervising of staff.
  6. Tracks daily activity of advising staff including number of calls, appointments, and academic plan creations.
  7. Compiles student success metrics for advising within assigned academic program or department.
  8. Develops, coordinates, and promotes student programming specific to their assigned career fields.
  9. Represents the college at events and open houses.
  10. Communicates important policies and processes to students and college staff, for example by creating demonstration videos or content for web pages.
  11. Develops and coordinates training on use of technology, including advising tools, CRM, and Guided Pathways.
  12. Provides administrative assistance to immediate supervisors; including the development, preparation and presentation of recommendations, data analysis and reports.
  13. Serves as departmental manager and content expert in designated career pathway (Transfer, Technical, Engineering, Fine Arts, Health Sciences, etc.) and/or college partnership (Guaranteed Admissions, 2+2, etc.)
  14. Manages and assists with qualitative and quantitative research on program and learning outcomes.
  15. Develops and shares knowledge of current best practices in serving community college students.
  16. Coordinates the activities of advisors, volunteers, interns and part-time staff at various campus locations.
  17. Utilizes technology that supports best practices in case management advising strategy (such as MyConnect, Colleague, Student Planning).
  18. Participates in college and departmental evaluations as part of the annual review process.
  19. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements and Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in Student Services, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Education, or related area and 3-5 years of student advising experience at the college level, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
